In this healthy twist on the traditional holiday dish, tart cranberries and naturally sweet dates combine to make a delicious sauce with only whole fruit and no added refined sugars.
12 oz. package fresh or frozen cranberries
1-1/4 cups dates, pitted and chopped (adjust amount of dates depending on the sweetness of the dates you are using and how sweet you like the sauce)
1-1/2 cups water
1. If dates are very dry, heat the 1-1/2 cups water in medium saucepan, turn off heat, add dates and let soak for about 15 minutes. If dates are already moist, skip this step.
2. Add cranberries, dates and water to saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat and then stir sauce over heat until the cranberries “pop” and the sauce thickens.
3. Chill before serving.
Instead of chopping the pitted dates, dates and water can be combined and pureed in a blender and then added to the cranberries and cooked as in Steps 2 and 3.
